Born from Speed: The Beginnings

The story of Jackson begins with a man named Grover Jackson, who bought Charvel in 1978 and shortly afterwards realised his own vision of the ultimate metal guitar. The big breakthrough came in 1980 with the legendary Concorde model, developed for none other than Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne). With its sharply contoured, futuristic shape and unrivalled playability, the Concorde broke all conventions — and made Jackson a cult brand in the metal world.

Here instruments are created that are built to the smallest detail to customer specification – from wood selection through neck profile, inlays, finish and electronics to the final finishing of the fret ends. Each Custom Shop model is a masterpiece, built by luthiers who are musicians themselves – and who know exactly what matters.

Pat Campolattano is a lead Master Builder at Jackson. With roots in traditional craftsmanship he discovered his love for guitars early on. After Berklee College and the Guitar Craft Academy he quickly became known for unique custom instruments, including pieces for stars like Megadeth, Taylor Swift and Aerosmith.

„Red“ Dave Nichols has been a Master Builder at Jackson since 2006. Previously he spent 16 years at the Fender Custom Shop. He discovered his passion for wood early on – today, as a guitar maker, he fulfils dreams and loves seeing customers hold their dream instrument with shining eyes.

Joe Williams has been at the Jackson Custom Shop since 2005 and was appointed Master Builder in 2018. From a teenager modifying Squier guitars to an expert in the finest custom instruments, he developed, among other things, the first Jackson multiscale guitars and worked on the legendary Randy Rhoads tribute.

„Big“ Rob Knowles built his first electric guitar as a child – by the age of nine he was already playing and repairing instruments himself. After stints at Fender and the FMIC network he specialised in complex high-performance guitars and was appointed a Jackson Master Builder in 2021.
