John Suhr has been building guitars for over 35 years and counts some of the world's most famous artists among his customers. In his own workshop, he makes customised guitars to order.
The whole story of Suhr
John Suhr began his career as an instrument maker about 35 years ago in New Jersey. In search of the perfect tone during his time as a bar musician, he began building his own instruments. In the early 80's John began working for Rudy Pensa at Rudy's Music Stop in New York City. It was during this time that the ‘Pensa-Suhr’ guitars were born. John built guitars under the ‘Pensa-Suhr’ brand for Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Lou Reed, Bill Connors, Steve Stevens, Reb Beach, Pat Thrall, Little Steven, Victor Bailey Pensa-Suhr Bass, Chuck Loeb, Eddie Martinez and many others.
To realise his dream, John opened his own small factory in 1997 where he made guitars to order. John Suhr finally had full control over the entire process of building the ideal electric guitars and basses with the highest possible quality standards and unwavering attention to detail.
Together with his son Kevin, John is now entering the most creative phase of his career. You can expect many more years of groundbreaking new products from John and the Suhr team.

Choose your favourite from the six basic models Standard S, Classic S, Classic T, Classic JM, Modern S and Modern T and start configuring. You can choose from a variety of woods, pickups and parts of the highest quality. The special thing about the Suhr Custom configurator is that thanks to the changing animation, you can see exactly how the guitar is being created before your eyes. When you are finished, you will receive your configuration as a PDF and can send it to us or print it out and come to one of our branches. Together we will help you to realise the dream of your personal Suhr guitar.
